Abstract

PPZ-induced cell apoptosis. Further more, we found that PPZ significantly reduced secretion of the pro-inflammatory cytokine, IL-6, from gastric cancer cells, while not affect the gastric epithelia cells. The anti-tumor effect of PPZ was consistent with a clear inhibition of IL-6/ STAT3 signaling pathway in gastric cancer cells. The downstream genes of STAT3, which regulate cell growth or cell cycle, were also downregulated. Together, this study suggests that the direct and selective antitumor effects of PPIs may be involved with the IL-6/ STAT3 pathway and indicates the potential use of PPIs as antineoplastic agents towards gastric cancers.
