Abstract

Summary Tetraploid bitter fennel plants [Foeniculum vulgare Miller subsp. capillaceum (Gilib.) Holmboe var. vulgare (Miller) Thellung] have been obtained following treatment of an embryogenic cell suspension with 0,05 % colchicine for 24 h or 48 h. Eight eutetraploid plant (2n = 4× = 44) have been regenerated and further micropropagated in vitro. Several aneutetraploid plants with 43 chromosomes and mixoploid plants constituted of 2× and 4× cells were also regenerated from 48 h treated cells. Eutetraploids produced some fruit when field grown. Their progeny was also eutetraploid. Most pollen grains of tetraploid plants exhibited an unusual morphology, often having four lobes arranged tetraedrally.
