Abstract

IN the revival of rhetoric that has been going on in American schools during the past several years, perhaps too little attention has been given to the ultimate purposes or goals of rhetoric. Certainly we cannot talk about adapting discourse to its ends, or about the relevance of rhetoric for the schools, unless we identify those purposes or goals.
