Abstract

Abstract In this paper we study ionic selectivity and surface charge density of several microporous membranes which are Nuclepore filters separating two NaCl solutions whose concentrations are c 1 and > c 1. We distinguish between adsorbed charges and those belonging to the membrane surface (true charges of the membrane). We find that ionic selectivity increases linearly with the surface density of charges due to the membrane. These surface charge densities agree with those determined by Meares et al. from electroosmotic measurements.
