Abstract

Diarrhoea is a frequently distressing symptom during visits to tropical and subtropical countries. It is important to recognize and treat various causes of diarrhoea in travellers. This paper describes the approach to diarrhoea in travellers to the tropics, with such causes as salmonella, shigella, and Campylobacter infections, food poisoning, and various parasitic and non-infectious causes of diarrhoea. Finally, causes, mechanisms, prevention, and treatment of travellers' diarrhoea are discussed.
