Abstract
The first edition of the Manual of Tropical Medicine which appeared in 1945 under the auspices of the Division of Medical Sciences of the National Research Council with the collaboration of medical officers and other military personnel to fill an urgent need for medical military officers during World War II has evolved from a slight manual of roughly 700 pages, measuring approximately 6″ × 9″ and weighing less than two pounds into a rather definitive text of Tropical Medicine of about 900 pages measuring 7½″ × 10½″ and weighing almost five pounds. I do not recall the original cost but I would guess the present cost is at least seven times more than the original manual. There has been an apparent lack of a comprehensive text published in this country covering in a single volume the more significant infections encountered in the so-called tropics. In the 5th edition the authors can and in subsequent editions will be able to fulfill this need.
