Abstract
Elementary reading and writing is the basis for the instruction and education of Turkish. Elementary reading and writing is crucial in that they are the cornerstone of the entire educational life. Accordingly, it is a prerequisite that children should experience a wholesome education of their mother tongue in order that they will be successful members of the community all their lives. The issue of teaching Turkish to Turkish students at the age of elementary reading and writing started to take place in our educational life during the Tanzimat Period. So, Nuhbet?ul-Etfal is a significant book of its time in terms of elementary reading and writing. In this work, Nuhbet?ul-Etfal, a Turkish instruction book written during the Tanzimat Period, has been studied from the point of view of elementary reading and writing and it has been attempted to underline the importance of the book in line with the changing educational curriculum.
