Abstract

Fairy tales are irrational narratives which hold rational elements in their structures. Fairy tales are intertwined with life on the contrary of being disconnected from life; because fairy tales tell about people to people. In the existentialist movement where the existence of human beings is questioned, existence is individual; in other words it is subjective and human beings are tackled with all their aspects. Existentialism has taken advantage of literary genre go give tangibility to its ideas. Abstract ideas have been strengthened, fictionalized and have entered into daily life with flat characters in various literary works. In this sense, as Existentialism is a ‘human’ based philosophical movement, it is also in harmony with the fairy tale world, which emulates daily life and is full of symbolic messages, and its fictional adventure. However, fairy tales are texts which are more didactical and have apparent end. Eventually, these are the kinds of texts which are open to reception and analysis of its symbolic language with the protagonists that are distant representatives of the human beings who have been stereotyped without detail in time and descriptive figures. In this study, it has been laid emphasis on Existentialism design in Turkish fairy tales with reference to philosophy – Existentialism, philosophy – literature; literature- philosophy, fairy tale – Existentialism with the symbolic language and ‘Reception Aesthetic’ view. Thus, we have come across with fairy tale flat characters or fairy tale protagonists who have an ‘existentialist’ struggle to become a protagonist in the fairy tales that have been studied in the frame of ‘symbolic language and background’ with an interdisciplinary approach
