Triple Negative Breast Cancer—Pattern of Recurrence and Survival: A Single Institute Experience

Abstract

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a distinct biological entity and recent data shows it as a heterogeneous group with at least 6 subtypes with differences in clinical outcome.This study intends to analyze the prevalence, recurrence pattern and outcome of triple negative breast cancer in our patient cohort.We reviewed the outcomes of 244 consecutive triple negative non-metastatic breast cancer patients who were treated with a radical intent from Jan 2004 to Dec 2014. Data collection was performed from June 2016 to Jan 2017.Statistical analysis was done using IBM SPSS version 20. Median follow up was 44 months. Median age of our patients was 51 years (range 22–86 years). Thirty eight patients had recurrence. Pattern of recurrence was 37% loco regional alone, 55%, had local plus systemic, and 8% were systemic alone. There was no statistical difference in recurrence between BCS and MRM.Overall survival (OS) of this group was 84% at 125 months and disease free survival (DFS) at 120 months was 79%. As in literature our study also showed increased risk of loco regional failure in triple negative breast cancer.
