Abstract

Abstract Though the narrative sources of Chaucer's Shipman's Tale are well enough recognized—in Boccaccio and perhaps Sercambi—the source for lines VII 11-19 has not been found. Here a wife complains that, because of her husband's perceived meanness, she may have to acquire money for “array” from another, which may be “perilous” and lead to a breaking of the marriage bond. It is suggested here that a quotation from an English song in Gilbertus Minorita's Distinctiones (in Trinity College Dublin MS 347) may provide evidence that there was a text, so far unidentified outside these snatches, which could have been used by Chaucer for the passage in the Shipman's Tale.
