Abstract

Tricarbonyl-tris(trifluoromethyl isocyanide)molybdenum ( 3a) and -tungsten ( 3b) are formed upon reaction of trifluoromethyl isocyanide ( 1) with tricarbonyl(η 6-cycloheptatrien)molydenum ( 2a) and -tungsten ( 2b), respectively. The NMR spectra indicate that these compounds are formed as the meridial isomers. Photolysis of 3a and 3b in the presence of 1 yields unseparable mixtures of the compounds (CO) x M(CNCF 3) 6− x . The homoleptic trifluoromethyl isocyanide complex hexakis(trifluoromethyl isocyanide)chromium ( 5) has been synthesized in low yields by reaction of tris(η 3-allyl)chromium ( 4) with 1. The yellow air-stable crystals of 5 possess a high vapour pressure at ambient temperature, and are thermally stable up to 180°C. The structure of 5 has been determined by an X-ray diffraction study.
