Learning is the thing for you. ... (White 1966, 183). Merlin's quote illustrates Barry Lumsden's philosophy of life and teach ing. Lumsden, professor of higher edu cation at North Texas State University in Dent?n, Texas, teaches a doctoral course, Improving College Teaching, which deserves a more extensive audi ence than is possible on a single univer sity campus. As a student in his summer class, I discovered that the pieces of knowledge taught each day were not in sular facts but portions of an intangible process, continually moving and enlarg ing, evolving into an exhilarating journey without a final destination.
