Abstract
Efforts are under way in many countries to implement the use of alternative automotive fuels primarily from the standpoint of preserving the global environment. A great deal of work is being done on methanol in particular because of its potential for reducing NO x and ozone emissions to levels lower than those normally seen for gasoline and diesel fuel. There are numerous hurdles that will have to be overcome to make methanol vehicles a practical reality. This paper focuses on concerns related to engine oil deterioration and wear of sliding surfaces in methanol engines.
