Abstract

The comparative investigation of tribological characteristics of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings and hard coatings such as Al 2O 3, TiN and WC in conditions of high sliding speeds in various gaseous atmospheres—air, helium, hydrogen and vacuum—have been performed. It is shown that the friction pair DLC-TiN exhibits the most wear resistance while retaining low friction coefficient. No influence of the gas medium or vacuum on the wear of the above-mentioned coatings was observed. DLC can be recommended for use for friction parts in high speed friction units of different mechanisms.
