Abstract

In this study, we developed a new multifunctional mercaptotriazine-containing organic molybdenum with excellent properties to enhance the tribological performance of biodegradable based oils. The coefficient of friction and wear scar diameter are greatly reduced up to ~40% and ~44%, respectively. Surface analyses reveal that the tribofilm is mainly composed of FeS, FeSO4, Fe2O3, MoO3, MoS2 and FeMoO4. Furthermore, the tribofilm also exhibits a layered structure with different chemical compositions, in which the sulfur in the body tribofilm mainly exists in the form of S2−, SO32− and SO42−, while the sulfur in the subsurface of the tribofilm is mainly composed of S2− and SO42−. Our findings might pave the way for exploiting the multifunctional and environmentally-friendly lubricating materials.
