Abstract

Four trichloromethylthiobenzenes, one tetrachloromethylthiobenzene and the corresponding five methyl sulphones have been synthesized. Two of these compounds, 2,3,5,-trichloromethylsulphonylbenzene (I) and 2,3,5,6-tetrachloromethylsulphonylbenzene (II), were identified in extracts of lettuce, potatoes and soil. The concentration of I and II was, in lettuce 50 ug/kg and 20 ug/kg, and in soil 250 ug/kg and 400 ug/kg, respectively. Both compounds are most probably metabolites of 2,3,5,6-tetrachloronitrobenzene (Tecnazene) formed via microbial activity in the soil and/or plant metabolism.
