Abstract
Although there are various studies regarding the use of video in distance education, very little synthesizing research on the subject is available. In this study, 253 studies published between 1990 and 2015 are analyzed and a research trend is identified regarding educational video use in distance education. Findings from the study indicate that there is a rising research trend in applied fields such as health and engineering, focusing on the technical aspects of video. However, it has also been found that video use in distance education has not been sufficiently studied regarding its social aspects. Based on the findings of the study, suggestions are made for further studies. Innovative research suggestions about using 360o video and video games in distance education are also offered.
Highlights
Educational videos are the richest content combining the visual and verbal in the multimedia learning processes in e-learning environments
The research on the use of videos in e-learning environments has important implications for more effective use of videos in such environments. Grounded on such a rationale, this study aims to find out the usage trends of educational videos in distance learning environments
Learners’ preference for videos as the learning material in distance learning programs can be seen as the reason to drive the attention of distance learning studies towards educational videos. Predicated on this reason and based on the obtained data, this study has identified how often and in which years, in which fields, for what reasons, and in what ways educational videos are used in distance learning environments
Summary
Educational videos are the richest content combining the visual and verbal in the multimedia learning processes in e-learning environments. Sounds and images are powerful tools that are frequently used in current learning environments (Mayer, 2009). Using both visual and verbal elements facilitate learning for learners with different learning styles (Vural, 2013). Because of this feature, videos enhance the attitudes of students and value of teaching and learning (Giannakos, Jaccheri & Krogstie, 2015). The rapid development of video technology has been gaining an increasing attention. In recent years; increased video resolution, interactive videos, 360o videos, 3D videos and video games are examples of remarkable video technology
