Abstract

Currently, there are different trends in Agency Member States for technology improvements in nuclear power reactors and reactor designs. The overall objectives of these improvements are further plant cost reduction, better plant performance, and enhanced safety features. Development directions include simplification in plant design, ease of maintenance, reduction of construction time by modularization and shop fabrication, and utilization of passive safety features. The paper gives an overview of the status and trends in the design and technology of water cooled reactors, gas-cooled reactors, and liquid metal cooled reactors along with a review of their main passive safety systems and features. The paper also describes the role of the Agency as a global international organization for the promotion of information exchange and international cooperation for the further development of small and medium sized nuclear reactors.
