Abstract

N NO REALM of the Hispanic Studies has there been more progress during the past fifty years than that of linguistics. It is quite fitting, therefore, that we take note on this Anniversary of the Hispanists who have dedicated themselves to this aspect of culture and to the results of their efforts in terms of vastly increased knowledge of Spanish as it actually is spoken. In 1917 procedures and outlook may have been largely normative, rules were prescriptive, and according to many hispanos as well as hispanistas, millions of Latin Americans spoke a bad sort of Spanish, try as they would to imitate the pure Castilian-which they had presumably corrupted! Many a teacher was asked: Do you speak Castilian or Mexican?
