Abstract

Except for the Philippines, where it is a compulsory high school subject, physics is taught as an option from Grade 9 (approximate age 15) in most South-East Asian countries. At lower levels physics is taught as part of general science, integrated science, or environmental science. For those who wish to pursue physics beyond high school, all the universities in the region offer a first degree in physics. However, despite this, the scarcity of physics graduates is the most predominant in the different science disciplines-possibly an outcome of a sizable number of graduates branching out to other areas, e.g. computer science. The physics graduate is, thus far, a very 'marketable commodity'. While all the universities in the region have placed priority on undergraduate studies in the first instance, many have moved on and are now offering a postgraduate research degree leading to either the Masters or the PhD.
