Abstract

Clozapine was the first atypical antipsychotic drug to be approved for the treatment of schizophrenia and is usually reserved for treatment refractory patients. While clozapine is a highly effective antipsychotic, it is infrequently used secondary to severe and potentially life-threatening side effects such as agranulocytosis, myocarditis, seizures, anti-muscarinic effects and orthostatic hypotension. These potential side effects can be especially hard to manage in the geriatric population.
