Abstract

A feasible method for treatment of the wastewater from the ABS resin manufacturing process, based on combined Fe0/GAC and aerated biological fluidized bed (ABFB), was developed. Meanwhile the effect of operating temperature and HRT on the decomposition or transformation of main pollutants by Fe0/GAC reactor was investigated in this study. On conditions of HRT 4h and operating temperature 30°C in Fe0/GAC reactor, the COD removal efficiency and NH4+–N transformation efficiency were 30–45% and 50–60%, respectively. In addition, the lower temperature (e.g., 5°C) would limit the activity and treatment efficiency of Fe0/GAC reactor, while this reactor could recover its activity and obtain high COD removal efficiency at the higher operating temperature (e.g., 30 or 60°C). The deep treatment of the effluent of Fe0/GAC reactor was performed by ABFB reactor, and the COD removal efficiency reached 90–95%. The decomposition or transformation of the aromatic compounds and organic nitriles in ABS resin wastewater was analyzed by UV–vis and FTIR. The experimental results indicate that the Fe0/GAC–ABFB system could perform a good treatment for the ABS resin wastewater and meet the discharge standard in China.
