TREATMENT OF UROLITHIASIS WITH TEMPUYUNG LEAF IN LOCAL CAT

Abstract

Urolithiasis is a condition of calculi formation as a result of urine supersaturation, consisting of one or several type of mineral such as calcium oxalate, and phosphate that can move down along the ureters, bladder, and urethra. Urolithiasis is one of the most common diseases in animal. as many as 50 of 385 cats experienced urolithiasis. Tempuyung (Sonchus arvensis L.) is one of the medicinal plants that was efficacious as a kidney stone breaker and urine streamer. organic compounds such as flavonoids efficacious break the kidney stone and treat inflammation of the urinary tract. This reported case occurred in a local cat, male, 4.5 years old, 3.6 kg, who came to the Teaching Veterinary Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University, with difficulty urinating for a few days and when the urine came out it looked mixed blood. Physical examination showed cat was dehydrated. Supportive examinations were carried out in the form of hematological examination, ultrasonography (USG), and urine sedimentation. The result of the hematological examination showed that the animal had hypochromic microcytic anemia, ultrasound result showed calculi in the urinary bladder. The animal was diagnosed with urolithiasis with a dubius-fausta prognosis. The therapy that has given was fluid therapy, injection therapy with amoxicillin (antibiotic), and herbal medicine tempuyung leaves (oral). The cat's condition improved after therapy, characterized by urination without hematuria and no pain during urination, and it is recommended that the feed pattern be changed to wet feed.
