Abstract

Congenital syphilis is an infectious disease caused by the spirochete bacterium Treponema pallidum and is among the most frequent perinatal infections in Brazil. The maintenance of its high incidence demonstrates the need for improvement in prenatal care, since the diagnosis is quick and the treatment is carried out with penicillin, an affordable antibiotic. It can lead to serious consequences, such as fetal or perinatal death, prematurity, low birth weight, and neurological sequelae. The epidemiological importance of the disease and the direct and indirect costs it generates justifies the need for investment in better services and professional training. This article proposes to review the main points on the subject, from the current literature.
