Abstract

The treatment of anorexia nervosa in childhood and adolescence is reviewed, focussing on the recommendations contained in the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) guideline published in 2004. Few good quality research trials exist to guide decision-making, but consensus opinion stresses the importance of engagement, treatment on an out-patient basis where possible and cognitive change. Family-based treatments should always be offered. Management should include the assessment of physical and psychological risk at all stages through treatment, as risk may increase over time.
