Abstract

Traumatic retinal detachment, which can occur in the early or late phases following open and closed globe injuries, can result in permanent loss of vision. Particularly, retinal detachments in the pediatric population are often related to trauma and can result in severe vision loss due to possible delay in diagnosis and incomplete maturation of the visual system. The optimal treatment for retinal detachments following open glob injuries is to maintain the globe integrity on day-1 and vitreoretinal surgery between day 10 and day 14; whereas retinal detachments following closed glob injuries should be treated as soon as possible. Low vision at presentation, open globe injury, presence of the intraocular foreign body, and proliferative vitreoretinopathy have been associated with poor prognosis.
