Abstract

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is widespread in the UK. Childbirth is a known trigger for CSA survivors due to the high potential for re-traumatisation, and vaginal examinations (VE) are particularly distressing. By offering VEs in a trauma-informed way that promotes the survivor’s autonomy, consent and bodily integrity, midwives can reduce the negative impact of VEs for survivors and promote positive, empowering birth experiences.
