Abstract

The evaluation of a smoking habit treatment program is presented. It has been carried out in a group of smokers who belonged to the Spanish Army. This program was offered by the Applied Psychology Service (SPA) at the UNED University and presented as a way to learn how to live without smoking. The mean age of the sample was 40,8 years (SD = 8,88). The treatment sessions were carried out once a week during three months, and the duration of each session was 90 minutes approximately. The program was based on the same principles as those taken into consideration in the treatment programmes by Buceta & Lopez de la Llave (1989) and Lopez de la Llave (1995). 6 out of the 7 subjects who fully completed the programme gave up smoking at the first test, whereas the seventh got it at the second attempt, keeping all of them abstinent from then on. The results in the Satisfaction Questionnaire showed a good valuation of the program. It is discussed how the effectiveness of the program is similar to those programmes with the same characteristics, pointing out some of the specific aspects of it.
