Abstract

Somatoform and factitious disordersAncient somatoform disorders have been replaced for «Somatic symptom and related disorders» in DSM-5. This category includes: somatization disorder, somatic pain disorder, hypochondria and conversion disorder. People suffering these disorders usually go to Primary Care service or other medical units and, less frequently, to Mental Health unit, which generates a high resources consumption for the public system. Underlying causes are still unknown. Taking in to account biographical experience and personality traits of the patient, biological and psychological causes seem to be involved. Deep clinical explorations as well as complementary tests are required in order to rule out underlying diseases. Treatment includes strategies for patient management and specific therapeutic measures (pharmacological and psychotherapeutic).
