Abstract
This chapter contains an introduction to movement disorders in which we review the anatomy, neurochemistry and functional organization of the basal ganglia. The chapter also mentions the classification of the various types of movement disorders and the semiological aspects of parkinsonian syndromes, with the etiologic classification of these syndromes. The chapter also reviews all aspects related to the epidemiology, neuropathology, neurochemistry, etiopathogenesis, genetics, symptoms, diagnosis and drug and surgical treatment of idiopathic Parkinson's disease.
