Abstract

Abstract : This report presents the results of an experimental and analytical investigation of the forced oscillations of a circular cylinder in uniform flow. The transverse force has been decomposed into two components and the appropriate force coefficients have been determined experimentally through the use of a Fourier-averaging technique. The results were then incorporated into the equation of motion to predict the dynamic response of elastically-mounted cylinders. The numerical predictions were found to be in good agreement with those obtained experimentally. The results of the discrete-vortex model of the separated flow field about an oscillating cylinder will be described in a separate report.
