Abstract

Objective:Nine children (male 4,female 5) with pituitary microadenoma were reated by transsphenoidal microsurgery from July 1985 to July 1996.Ages ranged from 8 to 15 years with a mean of 10.5 years.There were 6 of growth hormone secreting adenoma,2 of prolactinoma and 1 of ACTH secreting adenoma.Methods:Diagnosis was made by serum hormone level and CT or MRI scan.Operations were performed by either sublabiosepto-sphenoidal approach or naso-vestibulo-sphenoidal approach.Results:There was no operative death in this group.The long term follow-up (mean 2.2 years) of 7 patients revealed good recovery in 6.One patient with recurrance needed reoperation.Conclusion:It is safe and effective to remove the pituitary microadenoma in children by microsurgical technique via transsphenoidal approach.
