Abstract
Transport numbers in the basic AlCl3–1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid with varying mole fraction of aluminium chloride were determined by a modified Hittorf method at 33 °C. The change in the composition of the ionic liquid was established by Raman spectroscopy and by studying the variation in the conductivity of the electrolyte in the anodic compartment of the cell that had a porous membrane. Internal and external (relative to the chloride anion) transport numbers of [BMIm]+ cation do not depend on the mole fraction of aluminium chloride within the investigated concentration range studied and are 0.70 ± 0.01 and 1.02 ± 0.04, respectively. The values obtained for cation internal transport numbers show that AlCl4– and Cl– have similar mobility in the ionic liquid under study. The transport numbers in the chloroaluminate ionic liquids appeared to be unaffected by the cation size.
