Abstract

A liquid-phase processing method has been developed to manufacture bulk oriented-grained YBa 2Cu 3O x /silver (1-2-3/Ag) superconducting composites with large current carrying capacity and enhanced mechanical properties. It is found that addition of up to 25 wt.% Ag does not significantly affect the transport critical current density of these composites. Furthermore, J ct of 1-2-3/Ag composites is weakly dependent on applied magnetic field indicating that weak-links are largely eliminated through texturing. In a nominal 15 wt.% Ag, the values of J ct at 77 K are 86 000 A/cm 2 and 18 500 A/cm 2 at zero and 1.5 T applied field, respectively.
