Abstract
Developments in transport have revolutionised our lifestyle; we demand a high degree of personal mobility and expect the prompt transportation of goods over long distances. Speaking at celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Transport and Road Research Laboratory, Tom King, then Secretary of State for Transport, commended the establishment as a leading world centre which has been intimately involved in technological advances in transportation.
