Abstract
The study of light propagation in turbid media is of great importance for tissue imaging, component measurement and laser therapy. A geometric model for simulating Gaussian laser beam has been presented and proved by Monte Carlo method and experiment with sample of turbid suspension. The beam expansion ratio (BER) and total power attenuation have been used to evaluate the scattering and absorption characteristics of the samples. BER is a useful indicator to distinguish scattering medium and absorbing medium, and is sensitive to the position of focus plane. The power attenuation is sensitive to different suspensions and independent to focus position. The transmission measurement need be combined with method of reflection or refraction, which can give more information of the contribution of each optical parameter to power attenuation and beam expansion.
