Abstract

It is undeniable that machine translations are becoming a trend nowadays for their convenience, almost perfect accuracy, and immediacy. This paper is focused on the AI tool ChatGPT. The advent of AI in their translation process such as ChatGPT brings convenience but, at the same time, challenges. ChatGPT has been one of the applications that revolutionized the translation process. However, the elephant in the room is, “Is there still a need for human translators should they be replaced by these translation apps?” In this regard, this paper is directed to two overarching questions. First is “What kind of challenges are caused by ChatGPT for translators?” Second is “What strategies can translators adopt to address these problems?” To comprehensively respond to these queries, the descriptive method has been adopted. The participants of this paper are 18 licensed human translators, selected through incidental sampling, who all work in the IELTS language training center and process an average of 2,000-3,000 words per day. The data gathered were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. This paper has found that (i) ChatGPT is advantageous in the reduction of workload, particularly with languages that the translator is unfamiliar with; (ii) there are uncertainties with the integration of ChatGPT in the translation process; and (iii) there is a need for professional translators to develop and enhance their language skills and their competencies that are pertinent to translation.
