Abstract

There is a growing desire within the DoD to use open systems standards. Several groups with the DoD (e.g. Tri-Service Open Systems Architecture Committee and Naval Air Systems Command Advanced Avionics Architecture and Technology Review Team) and industry sponsored standards committees (e.g., Society of Automotive Engineers Avionics Division) are exploring the transition of open system standards to DoD use, with particular emphasis for mission critical applications. This paper explores the pros and cons for use of open systems standards within the DoD and discusses issues in making the transition to open systems standards. >
