Abstract

Transient space-charge-limited currents are studied for a voltage step applied to an insulator. The diffusive contribution to the current is investigated by use of a perturbation technique applied to the 0 th order (diffusion neglected) equations. The condition for neglecting diffusion is found to be that the applied voltage must be considerably greater than the thermal voltage ( kt q ). It is also shown that the current waveform is correctly obtained, prior to the arrival of charge at the anode, as the derivative of the 0 th order anode electric field.
