Abstract

Polypyrrole (PPy) was coated on polyethylene (PE) particles to enhance the electrorheological (ER) response. PPy-coated PE particles were synthesized by varying the FeCl 3·6H 2O amount to control the particle polarization. However, the ER response deteriorates severely and transient shear stress overshoots were observed at large FeCl 3·6H 2O amounts. The deteriorated ER response may arise from the increased conduction between the particles, originated from the shear-induced particle aggregation. The deteriorated ER response is improved by coating an insulting polymer on the PPy-coated PE particles.
