Abstract

This article describes a conceptual design of an ultrahigh vacuum beam shutter for an insertion device beamline at the Advanced Photon Source. Various aspects of the design such as geometry, cooling arrangement, and material selection are optimized based on thermal and stress finite element analysis. The goal of the optimization is to assure survivability while maintaining a reasonably compact physical size.
