Abstract

Due to low-cost of lithium-ion batteries, the cost of EVs is falling rapidly. However, the lack of ultra-low cost extremely fast charging (XFC) infrastructure is one of the major roadblocks in the implantation of electrification of transportation (EOT). As compared to the AC power-based electricity infrastructure, more than 30 % power and capital can be saved using DC microgrids. Both in terms of power handing and charging time, silicon carbide (SiC) power electronics provides superior performance. In this paper we have presented preliminary results of performance, reliability, and lower cost of ownership of SiC based DC XFC and lower cost manufacturing of SiC based power electronics.
