Abstract

The microstructures of the Guinier-Preston zone and similar Mg4Zn7 phase in the pre-deformed Mg-Zn-Y-Zr alloy have been investigated using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The results show that Guinier-Preston zone formed parallel to the basal plane of magnesium and kept fully coherent with the Mg lattice. Similar Mg4Zn7 phase is nucleated at the edge of the Guinier-Preston zone and eventually grow into a sphere-like precipitate. The schematically atomic models of Guinier-Preston zone transformed into similar Mg4Zn7 phase on the Mg lattice are established.
