Abstract

We propose a transflective configuration of a tristate liquid crystal display (LCD), which has a unique texture of the splay, π twist, and bend states so that it can be operated not only as a bistable device but also as a monostable one. By using the parameter space diagram method as well as a single-cell gap structure, the memory mode is optimized for a reflective type and the dynamic mode for a transmissive type. We demonstrate excellent optical performance of our transflective dual mode, such as an excellent dark state, a high contrast ratio, and a high transmittance efficiency.
