Abstract

THE essential role of the atmosphere in making life possible by excluding from the biosphere high energy radiation, particularly the solar ultraviolet, has long been appreciated. However, a pathway for the indirect transfer of radiation injury to air-breathing animals exists because the stratospheric aerosol layers are exposed to high solar ultraviolet intensities. These particles eventually descend into the lower atmosphere adjacent to the Earth's surface.
