Abstract

Over the past several years, a significant research effort has been undertaken aimed at the development of fiber optic sensors. This paper will review from a fundamental viewpoint the various acousto‐optic transduction mechanisms which take place in both single mode and multimode optical fibers, and which are being exploited in sensor applications. Various frequency regimes will be discussed covering static, sonic, and ultrasonic fields.
