Abstract

The participants in this discussion—sponsored by the Education Division at the AWWA Annual Conference held in Miami Beach, Fla., on May 18, 1982—pointed out that managers of water utilities in the 1980s must be creative, willing to take risks, and capable of communicating with the public. The panelists also considered ways to encourage management ambitions through training programs and job performance evaluations. Participants were: Patty Eaton, water and sewer commissioner, City of Tulsa, Okla.; Carl Goebel, administrator, Bureaus of Water and Hydropower, Portland, Ore.; James V. LaFrankie, president, American Water Works Service Company, Inc., Hadden Heights, N.J.; Robert C. Marini, president, environmental engineering division, Camp Dresser and McKee, Boston, Mass.; and Edward A. Powers, competency program faculty, American Management Association, New York, N.Y. Kay Kutchins, consultant, Personnel Services Etc., San Antonio, Texas, served as discussion leader. Kutchins is chairperson of the Management Development Committee, which is responsible for coordinating the AWWA Water Utility Management Institute Program at four university management centers.
