Abstract

Failures of train doors are the biggest single cause of delay and disruption of rail transit service; therefore, in-depth study and analysis of train door problems can lead to significant increases in the reliability of transit service. This digest describes (1) the development of a relational database for data on the causes and conditions of train door failures and (2) some preliminary analyses of the data. Following a summary, the digest is presented in six sections, as follows: (1) Introduction; (2) Development Process; (3) The Database Tool: Traindoors.com; (4) Traindoors.com and the Train Door Project Database; (5) First Results; and (6) The Path Forward.
