Abstract

Traditional Chinese medicine Tongxinluo stimulates coronary collateral growth in a pig myocardial infarction model

Highlights

  • Coronary artery disease (CAD) is characterized by coronary artery stenosis or occlusion, which is presently the leading cause of death

  • Coronary artery angiography (CAG) proved that left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) ligation was successfully performed with total occlusion in every established acute myocardial infarction (AMI) model (Figure 1)

  • Immunohistochemisty examination with VIII factor antibody showed that myocardial capillaries were stained in brown color (Figure 2)

Summary

Introduction

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is characterized by coronary artery stenosis or occlusion, which is presently the leading cause of death. Around 7.3 million people died from CAD every year accounting for approximately 13% of total death worldwide [1]. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) are currently two regular revascularization strategies. Both methods are unsuitable for patients with diffuse distal coronary atherosclerosis. Gene therapy has been promising to achieve biological bypass effect [4]. It may take long time before this strategy is developed mature enough to be widely applied in clinical practice [5]
