Abstract

Abstract This article seeks to examine popular proverbs from the central Arabian region of Najd in order to collect evidence for traditional architecture in the region. It will be seen that popular proverbs are a rich documentary source for understanding architectural heritage, including but not limited to, the types of buildings represented in the traditional built heritage of Najd, the distinguishing characteristics of those buildings, their constituent elements, materials used in construction, tools, and tradesmen. Folk literature in general, and proverbs in particular, are seen are seen to be a valuable, although non-traditional, source of information that springs from the depths of the indigenous culture itself.
